Presented by New State Cinema
This event is not hosted by the Footcandle Film Society — we're glad to help promote it.
More information / ticketsFor nine decades, the New State Cinema theater has served as a cornerstone of Newton’s community, a place where memories are made, stories come to life, and neighbors gather for a shared experience. We are incredibly proud to announce that this year marks the theater’s 90th anniversary of operation. Since it first opened its doors in August 1936, the world of film has changed dramatically, yet the joy of watching a story unfold on the big screen remains timeless. The New State Cinema would like to thank you for being a part of its history and invite you to a drop-in reception from 1pm until 3pm on Friday, August 28, 2026. Additionally, we will host an official ribbon cutting ceremony outside in front of the theater promptly at 4pm. Please feel free to share this invitation with anyone else you feel would like to join us for this celebration. To continue celebrating the theater’s major milestone, we will be showing a series of “classic films” popular during the theater’s opening year throughout the day on Saturday, August 29. The series will feature: • the Charlie Chaplin film MODERN TIMES at 1:00pm • the Frank Capra classic MR. DEEDS GOES TO TOWN at 3:30pm, and • the Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers film SWING TIME at 6:30pm. All three of these movies were released in 1936, the same year the State Cinema opened... and tickets are just $1.00 for each movie that day! You can purchase tickets in advance by visiting statecinemanewton.com. We invite you to join us for a nostalgic journey through the history of film. We look forward to welcoming you back to the theater to celebrate this special year. Please visit our website at www.statecinemanewton.com as well as our Facebook Page for details on how you can contribute stories, memories, and photos of this wonderful Newton landmark.
