Film Screening: THE DUKE

The Duke is a British comedy-drama film directed by Roger Michell with a screenplay by Richard Bean and Clive Coleman. Dealing with the 1961 theft of the Portrait of the Duke of Wellington, the film stars Jim Broadbent, Helen Mirren, Fionn Whitehead, Anna Maxwell Martinand Matthew Goode.

About the film:  In 1961, a 60-year-old taxi driver steals Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. He sends ransom notes saying that he will return the painting if the government invests more in care for the elderly.

A French fantasy drama film written and directed by Céline Sciamma (PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE). Winner of Best International Film at the San Diego International Film Festival and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards.


About the film: Nelly has just lost her grandmother and is helping her parents clean out her mother’s childhood home. She explores the house and the surrounding woods. One day she meets a girl her same age building a treehouse.

Film Screening: CYRANO

The A musical romantic drama directed by Joe Wright (ATONEMENT, PRIDE & PREJUDICE, DARKEST HOUR) based on the famous play Cyrano de Bergerac with music by Bryce and Aaron Dessner of the band THE NATIONAL.

About the film: A man ahead of his time, Cyrano de Bergerac (Peter Dinklage) dazzles whether with ferocious wordplay at a verbal joust or with brilliant swordplay in a duel. But, convinced that his appearance renders him unworthy of the love of a devoted friend, the luminous Roxanne (Haley Bennett), Cyrano has yet to declare his feelings for her and Roxanne has fallen in love, at first sight, with Christian (Kevin Harrison, Jr.).

Rated PG-13 for some strong violence, thematic and suggestive material, and brief language; Running time 2 hours 3 minutes

Belfast

The Footcandle Film Society will be screening the film BELFAST on Wednesday Jan. 12th and Thursday, Jan. 13th, 7:00pm each evening, at the Carolina Theatre in Downtown Hickory.


About the film: Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Kenneth Branagh, BELFAST is a poignant story of love, laughter and loss in one boy’s childhood, amid the music and social tumult of the late 1960s. Starring Caitriona Balfe, Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Ciaran Hinds, and Jude Hill.
