The Footcandle Film Society will be screening the Japanese film SHOPLIFTERS on Wednesday, February 13th and Thursday, February 14th at the Carolina Theater in Downtown Hickory. The showtime is 7:00pm on both evenings.
The screening is free to all current Footcandle Film Society members. All available seats will be sold to the public for $5.00 a ticket starting at 6:50pm, space permitting.
The film, directed by Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Koreeda (LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON and NOBODY KNOWS) is one of the nominees for Best Foreign Language Film at this year's Academy Awards. The film currently holds a 99% "fresh" rating at Rotten Tomatoes and a 91% audience score.
About the film: (Subtitled, Japan) After one of their shoplifting sessions, Osamu and his son come across a little girl in the freezing cold. At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu’s wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces. Although the family is poor, barely making enough money to survive through petty crime, they seem to live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them.
The film is rated R for mature audiences only due to some sexual content and nudity.
