Upcoming Screening - "The Kid With A Bike" - June 14th @ 7pm

Footcandle Film Society will be bringing the lastest film from Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne, "The Kid With A Bike" for a screening June 14th at 7pm in the downstairs auditorium of the Carolina Theater. The film has been received favorably internationally and won awards at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.

About the film: A 12-year-old is abandoned by his father and forced to live at a state-run orphange. In a random act of kindness, the town hairdresser agrees to take care of the child on the weekends.

Footcandle will be screening the most recent film by The Duplass Brothers, "Jeff, Who Lives At Home", May 10th at 7pm at the Carolina Theater in downtown Hickory. The film stars Jason Segel ("Forgetting Sarah Marshall", "The Muppets"), Ed Helms ("The Office", "Cedar Rapids", "The Hangover"), and Susan Sarandon ("Dead Man Walking", "The Rocky Horror Picture Show")

About the film:

Dispatched from his basement room on an errand for his mother (Sarandon), slacker Jeff (Segel) might finally discover his destiny when he spends the day with his brother (Helms) as he tracks his possibly adulterous wife.

Special Screening - The Last Mountain - April 26th @ 7pm

Footcandle will be hosting a special documentary film screening on Thursday, April 26th of the 2011 film "The Last Mountain". An optional discussion of the film will be held afterwards for those that wish to attend. The screening will take place at the Carolina Theater in Downtown Hickory, NC starting at 7pm. Admission to this special screening is free to the public, although donations are encouraged.

About the film:

"The Last Mountain" is a spellbinding tour along the front lines of America's spirited battle over the environment and the economy. Set deep in the heart of Appalachian West Virgnia, this consciousness-raising film captures a rowdy band of citizens as they try to stop a giant coal company from blowing up a pristine mountain for its coal. Kennedy Jr. joins the Appalachian families to fight the extraordinary and insidious powers of Big Coal.

Afterwards we'll stick around and discuss what we thought of the film.

Film Summary: From Iranian writer/director Asghar Farhadi comes a story of a married couple faced with a difficult decision - to improve the life of their child by moving to another country or to stay in Iran and look after a deteriorating parent who has Alzheimer's disease. Footcandle is proud to be partnering with the Hickory International Council for this event.

This modern-day silent film artfully recounts the poignant end of the silent-movie era in the late 1920s. The story contrasts the declining fortunes of a silent-screen superstar with his lover's rise to popularity as a darling of the "talkies."

Footcandle is pleased to be screening the Academy Award-nominated film "My Week With Marilyn" on Thursday, February 9th, at the Carolina Theater in Downtown Hickory.

Film Summary: Sir Laurence Olivier is making a movie in London. Young Colin Clark, an eager film student, wants to be involved and he navigates himself a job on the set. When film star Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams) arrives for the start of shooting, all of London is excited to see the blonde bombshell, while Olivier is struggling to meet her many demands and acting ineptness, and Colin is intrigued by her. Colin's intrigue is met when Marilyn invites him into her inner world where she struggles with her fame, her beauty and her desire to be a great actress.

This film has two Oscar nominations: Best Actress (Michelle Williams) and Best Supporting Actor (Kenneth Branagh).
